BLENDING CULTURES and LANDSCAPES

Nestled in the serene Dunbar area of Vancouver, British Columbia, this stunning residence is a masterclass in merging architectural innovation with cultural heritage. Designed by BLA Design Group, the home reimagines contemporary living by intertwining the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest with traditional Asian design influences. The result? A space that tells a story of family, heritage, and a deep connection to nature.

WEST COAST MODERN MEETS EASTERN ELEGANCE

The residence is a quintessential example of West Coast modern architecture—characterized by its use of natural materials, clean lines, and forms that seamlessly integrate with the lush forests and dynamic skies of the Pacific Northwest. Earthy tones of brown, beige, and gray dominate the design, paying homage to Vancouver’s misty weather and verdant landscapes.

What truly sets this home apart is its infusion of Eastern design principles. As Jerry Liu, co-principal of BLA Design Group, explains: “By reintroducing memories from the past into the present, the house combines West Coast modern architecture with traditional Chinese design details in a personalized way that enhances the owners’ daily comfort and experience.”

ARCHITECTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

From the first approach, the home’s connection to nature is immediately apparent. Standing seam metal cladding protects the structure from Vancouver’s frequent rain, while naturally stained cedar siding softens its modern lines, anchoring it to its wooded surroundings.

A striking gable roof extends over the main level, creating a cantilevered cover for the recessed entry patio—a welcoming gesture for residents and guests alike. At the back of the home, large sliding glass doors blur the line between indoors and outdoors, seamlessly connecting the living and dining areas to the patio and garden.

HONORING HERITAGE THROUGH DESIGN

The homeowners, a Chinese-Canadian family originally from Hangzhou, China, worked closely with the design team to ensure the home reflected their cultural roots. This collaboration is evident in the thoughtful integration of traditional Chinese elements throughout the design.

In the entryway, slatted wood panels frame a custom topographic sculpture of Hangzhou, setting the tone for the home’s harmonious blend of past and present. Elsewhere, wood slatted walls—reminiscent of traditional Chinese ping fengroom dividers—create subtle separations while allowing light to flow freely.

Furnishings and décor sourced directly from China further enrich the home’s authenticity. From a custom tea table to carefully selected dining pieces, each item carries cultural significance, creating an environment that feels both personal and timeless.

A PALETTE INSPIRED BY NATURE

The design’s connection to the Pacific Northwest is reinforced through its carefully chosen materials and color palette. Warm, earthy tones mirror Vancouver’s moody skies and lush forests. Natural wood cladding adds warmth and texture, while sleek metal finishes provide durability and modernity. Inside, matte finishes evoke understated elegance and sophistication.
