Foodie Architects: ASTET

Founded in 2019 by Ala Zreigat and Óscar Engroba, Astet Studio is one of the rising stars of the design world. Astet, an abstract term derived from the combination of the Spanish word "estética" and the English word "aesthete," is based in Barcelona. As a result, the Mediterranean flavor is evident in every project the duo works on. The founders of Astet, who have designed restaurant, bar and hotel projects in many different countries including Spain, Portugal, Italy, Mexico and Dubai, met at the Aethos Hotel project in Ericeira, the surfing hub of Portugal. That's where the interview begins...
How did you come together?
Astet Studio was founded by me (Ala Zreigat) and Óscar Engroba to pursue our mutual passion for interior design. Although we had very different journeys before we met, we both always wanted to have our own practice and make a genuine mark in interior design. At the time that we met we were both working for an interior design firm in Barcelona. In late 2018, I was approached by an investor who had just bought a fantastic property in Portugal and wanted to convert it into a hotel (Aethos Ericeira). I realized that was the opportunity of a lifetime and asked Oscar if he wanted to partner up and work on this project together. And so in an organically Astet started.
How was the design process of the Aethos project?
One of the challenges in designing Aethos Ericeira was to make it work in every season, and we believe we have solved this by proposing a dialog between cold and warm materials. With materials such as warm wood, leather, velvet, carpet, stone and marble... We also took into consideration the fact that Aethos Ericeira is aimed at a young, striving community, including nomads who love surfing but also appreciate effortless luxury. We wanted to create a feeling that it belongs to the context, but also that it is like an international project where anyone from anywhere would feel happy and relaxed, that they belong and are not out of place.
Astet Studio is mostly known for its restaurant design projects. Is that a particular preference? Why do restaurant design projects appeal to you?
We are passionate about the restaurant industry. You could even call us "foodie architects" because we believe that restaurants are the best platform to express our creativity. Designing restaurants allows us to fully explore and push the boundaries of our ideas, creating a whole new world in a short amount of time.
What was the main design theme of the Nota Blu project? What was the idea behind the project?
Nota Blu project was inspired by the Mediterranean, resulting in a cozy, sophisticated and fresh space, where the intense blue of the sea is combined with the white tones of the buildings of the south. The color palette and textures transform the space, evoking the presence of the sea in a not-so-literal way. Nature is also very present in this project. The combination of materials such as wood, natural stone and cream-colored microcement, together with curved elements, guarantees an organic and fluid perception of the spaces. Large plant installations that descend from the ceiling in the form of light fixtures give the interior a more natural feel and also become a focal point.
THERE IS A HIDDEN POSITIVE COMPETITION BETWEEN US
What are the difficulties and advantages of duo work?
The advantages of working as a duo outweigh the disadvantages, if any. How does it work? The main thing is transparency. A partnership is almost like a marriage, so transparency is really important. The secret is to let things go and not be too picky about every single thing. You have to make room for positivity and good energy all the time. You share a lot of work, and in our case Óscar and I (Ala Zreigat) have very different profiles in the company and very different roles, so we complement each other. We are stronger as a duo than as individuals. We are very united and aligned, and we feel we are stronger together.
Having two sets of eyes is always better. There's a kind of secret positive competition. We always want to be better versions of ourselves and always want to prove to each other that we are working hard and doing our best for the benefit of our studio and the projects we are creating. And of course, we support each other. If one of us is low on energy or makes a mistake, we support and help each other out and learn a lot from each other.
Maybe the disadvantage is that Oscar is a better dresser than I am, so he always makes me look underdressed compared to him!
OUR INSPIRATION IS THE WARMTH, TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ENERGY OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
What are the Mediterranean things that inspire you as a Mediterranean design studio?
We are inspired by the color palettes and natural materials, as well as the warmth, traditional craftsmanship, and energy of the Mediterranean... Our studio relies heavily on tradition and context, drawing inspiration from Mediterranean culture, styles, crafts, food, architectural techniques, and even small details. For example, when I talk about color palettes, I mean the landscape with its earthy tones, deep blues and beautiful greens. The pop of color on this neutral canvas. These characteristics of the Mediterranean definitely inspire our design proposals.
You define the essence of Astet Studio as "the balance between simplicity and complexity". But is this balance always achieved in the same way?
We draw much of our inspiration from tradition, organic ideas and the surrounding environment. We strive to ensure that each project is unique and different. To achieve a strong and distinctive personality in our creations, the studio offers custom furniture and lighting design for each project, ensuring that every detail is in line with the client's vision and goals. What sets us apart is our attention to detail. From designing chairs and lamps to creating tiles and patterns, the Astet team pushes the boundaries of concept to achieve the most customized result for each client.
Designs are being copied all the time, especially restaurants are taking a lot of design inspiration from each other. What do you think about that?
In the art and design world, it’s very difficult for people not to copy each other. But when it happens, it should be flattering because it is a form of compliment because it means you are doing a great job and people are copying you. But maybe instead of using the word "copy" we should use the word "inspire" and the idea is to propose projects that are inspired by others and of course pr modify it and change it and make it work for the context and project you are working for. Copying exactly, copy and pasting someone else is obviously a bad idea and will never work. For design we always consider elements in terms of context, user, business model, gastronomic offer, locations... so it's very hard to take something and copy it, unless you're not an intelligent designer. So instead of copying I would say inspired by.
Which of your new projects are you most excited about and why?
We are very fortunate to have many projects around the world. We are currently working on a restaurant in the Dominican Republic, another restaurant in Miami for the Spanish chef Dani García. We are also working on various projects in Budapest, a restaurant in Bucharest, we just finished a wonderful restaurant (Leña Dubai) in the St. Regis Hotel in the heart of Palm Jumeirah, and we are working on a golf club for the One&Only resort in Mexico.

İspanyolca 'estética' ve İngilizce 'aesthete' kelimelerinin birleştirilmesinden türetilmiş soyut bir terim olan Astet’in merkezi Barselona. Dolayısıyla ikilinin çalıştığı her projede Akdeniz tadı hissediliyor. Başta İspanya olmak üzere Portekiz, İtalya, Meksika ve Dubai gibi birçok farklı ülkede restoran, bar ve otel projesi tasarlayan Astet’in kurucularının tanışma hikâyesi ise Portekiz’in sörf merkezi Ericeira'daki Aethos Otel projesine dayanıyor. Biz de konuşmaya oradan başlıyoruz…
Nasıl bir araya geldiniz?
Astet Studio, ben (Ala Zreigat) ve Óscar Engroba tarafından iç mekan tasarımına olan ortak tutkumuzu sürdürmek için kuruldu. Tanışmadan önce çok farklı yolculuklarımız olmasına rağmen, ikimiz de her zaman kendi pratiğimize sahip olmak ve iç tasarımda gerçek bir iz bırakmak istedik. Tanıştığımız dönemde ikimiz de Barselona'da bir iç tasarım firmasında çalışıyorduk. 2018'in sonlarında, Portekiz'de harika bir mülk satın alan ve bunu bir otele [Aethos Ericeira] dönüştürmek isteyen bir yatırımcı bana ulaştı. Bunun hayatımın fırsatı olduğunu fark ettim ve Oscar'a bu projede birlikte çalışmak isteyip istemediğini sordum. Ve böylece organik bir şekilde Astet başlamış oldu.
Aethos projesinin tasarım süreci nasıldı?

Aethos Ericeira'nın, sörf yapmayı seven, ama aynı zamanda çabasız lüksü takdir eden göçebeler de dahil olmak üzere genç bir topluluğa yönelik olduğu gerçeğini de göz önünde bulundurarak, herhangi bir yerden gelen herkesin mutlu, rahat ve oraya ait hissedeceği global bir proje yarattığımızı düşünüyorum.
Astet daha çok restoran tasarımı projeleriyle öne çıkıyor. Bu özel bir tercih mi? Restoran tasarımı projeleri neden size cazip geliyor?
Restoran endüstrisi konusunda son derece tutkuluyuz. Hatta bize “gurme mimarlar” bile diyebilirsiniz. Çünkü restoranların yaratıcılığımızı ifade etmemiz için en iyi platform olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Restoran tasarlamak, fikirlerimizin sınırlarını tamamen keşfetmemize ve zorlamamıza, kısa bir zaman dilimi içinde tamamen yeni bir dünya yaratmamıza olanak tanıyor.
Nota Blu projesinin ana tasarım teması nedir? Hangi fikirden yola çıkarak proje oluşturuldu?
Nota Blu; Akdeniz'den ilham alan, denizin yoğun mavisiyle güneydeki binaların beyaz tonlarının birleştiği, rahat, sofistike ve ferah bir proje. Renk paleti ve dokular mekanı dönüştürerek denizin varlığını çok da gerçek olmayan bir şekilde çağrıştırıyor. Doğa da bu projede oldukça mevcut. Ahşap, doğal taşlar ve krem tonlu mikro çimentolar gibi malzemelerin kıvrımlı elemanlarla bir araya getirilmesi, mekanlarda organik ve akışkan bir algı sağlıyor. Tavandan armatür şeklinde inen büyük bitki enstalasyonları iç mekana daha doğal bir his verirken aynı zamanda bir odak noktası haline geliyor.

İkili çalışmanın zorluk ve kolaylıkları neler?
Avantajı, dezavantajlarından daha fazla. İşler nasıl yürüyor? En önemli şey şeffaflık. Bir ortaklık neredeyse bir evlilik gibi. Bu nedenle şeffaflık gerçekten önemli. İşin sırrı her şeyi oluruna bırakmak ve her konuda çok seçici olmamak. Pozitifliğe ve iyi enerjiye her zaman yer açmalısınız. Óscar ve ben (Ala) şirkette çok farklı profil ve rollere sahibiz, bu nedenle birbirimizi tamamlıyoruz. İkili olarak, birey olarak ayrı olmaktan daha güçlüyüz. Birbirimize bağlı ve uyumluyuz. Birlikte daha güçlü olduğumuzu hissediyoruz.
Ayrıca iki çift gözün olması her zaman daha iyidir! Aramızda gizli bir pozitif rekabet de var. Her zaman kendimizin daha iyi versiyonları olmak istiyoruz. Her zaman birbirimize çok çalıştığımızı ve yarattığımız projelerin yararı için elimizden gelenin en iyisini yaptığımızı kanıtlamak istiyoruz. Tabii ki birbirimizi destekliyoruz. Bazen birimizin enerjisi düşükse ya da bir hata yaparsa birbirimizi destekliyor, birbirimize yardımcı oluyor ve birbirimizden çok şey öğreniyoruz.
Belki tek dezavantajı Oscar'ın benden daha iyi giyiniyor olması. Bu yüzden beni her zaman ona kıyasla daha az giyinmiş gösteriyor!

Akdenizli bir tasarım stüdyosu olarak size ilham veren Akdenizli şeyler neler?
Renk paletleri ve doğal malzemelerin yanı sıra Akdeniz'in sıcaklığı, geleneksel işçiliği ve enerjisinden ilham alıyoruz. Stüdyomuz büyük ölçüde geleneğe ve bağlama dayanıyor. Akdeniz kültüründen, stilinden, el sanatlarından, yemeklerinden, mimari tekniklerinden ve hatta küçük ayrıntılardan bile ilham alıyoruz. Mesela renk paletlerinden bahsederken toprak tonları, derin maviler ve güzel yeşilli olan manzarayı kastediyorum. Akdeniz'in bu özellikleri tasarım önerilerimize kesinlikle ilham veriyor.
Astet Studio'nun özünü “basitlik ve karmaşıklık arasındaki denge” olarak tanımlıyorsunuz. Peki bu denge her zaman aynı şekilde sağlanabiliyor mu?
İlhamımızın çoğunu gelenekler, organik fikirler ve çevremizden alıyoruz. Her projenin benzersiz ve farklı olmasını sağlamayı amaçlıyoruz. Kreasyonlarımızda güçlü ve ayırt edici kişilikler elde etmek için her projeye özel mobilya ve aydınlatma tasarımı sunarak her detayın müşterinin vizyonuyla uyumlu olmasını sağlıyoruz. Bizi diğerlerinden ayıran şey, detaylara gösterdiğimiz dikkat. Astet ekibi, sandalye ya da lamba tasarlamaktan fayans ve desen oluşturmaya kadar konseptin sınırlarını zorlayarak her müşteri için en özel sonucu elde ediyor.
Tasarımlar sürekli kopyalanıyor, özellikle restoranlar tasarım olarak birbirinden çok fazla ilham alıyor. Bu konuda görüşünüz nedir?
Sanat ve tasarım dünyasında insanların birbirlerini kopyalamaması çok zor. Ancak bu gerçekleştiğinde gurur verici olmalı, çünkü bu bir tür iltifat. Çünkü harika bir iş yaptığınız ve insanların sizi kopyaladığı anlamına gelir. Ancak belki de “kopya” kelimesini kullanmak yerine “ilham vermek” kelimesini kullanmalıyız. Buradaki fikir, başkalarından ilham alan projeler önermek ve elbette bunları değiştirerek çalıştığınız bağlama ve projeye uygun hale getirmek. Bir başkasını aynen kopyalamak, kopyalayıp yapıştırmak kesinlikle kötü bir fikir. Ve asla işe yaramaz. Akıllı bir tasarımcı değilseniz, bir şeyi alıp kopyalamak çok zordur. Bu nedenle kopyalamak yerine esinlenmek diyebilirim.
Yeni projeleriniz arasında hangileri sizi heyecanlandırıyor ve neden?
Dünyanın dört bir yanında birçok projemiz olduğu için çok şanslıyız. Şu anda Dominik Cumhuriyeti'nde bir restoran ve İspanyol şef Dani García için Miami'de başka bir restoran üzerinde çalışıyoruz. Ayrıca Budapeşte'de çeşitli projeler üzerinde çalışıyoruz. Bükreş'te bir restoranı ve Palm Jumeirah'ın kalbindeki St Regis Hotel'deki restoran Leña Dubai’yi yeni bitirdik. Şimdi Meksika'daki One&Only resort için bir golf kulübü üzerinde çalışıyoruz.
