CI Photo Focus, 18’inci Contemporary İstanbul’un önemli bölümlerinden biri. Simone Klein küratörlüğünde gerçekleşecek bölümün öne çıkan sanatçısı ise Lennart Brede. Fotoğraf ve film alanlarında çalışan Londra ve Berlin merkezli sanatçıyla CI’daki sergisi öncesi mail aracılığı ile konuştuk.
En çok etkilendiğim fotoğraflarınızdan biri trans model Lola’nın portresi. Bu portrede her duygu bir arada: Masumiyet, öfke, gizem, merak… Peki sizin portre çekerken öncelikleriniz nedir?
Ah evet, teşekkür ederim. Benim de favorilerimden biri. Lola'nın ortaya çıkardığı ifade gerçekten çok güçlü değil mi? Portre çekerken önceliklerim değişkenlik gösteriyor. Genelde çekeceğim kişiyle oturup sohbet etmeyi severim. Belli bir hava yakalamak için… Sonra bir noktada stüdyo ya da mekana gidip çekimi yapıyoruz. Ama Lola’nın çekiminde durum biraz farklıydı. Voguing balosunda bir performans sergiledi ve tam sahneden indiği anda onu çekip son vuruşu yaptım!
Fotoğraflarınızda çıplak gerçeği mi göstermek mi istiyorsunuz yoksa kurgulanmış gerçekliği mi? Hangi sizin için daha cazip?
Güzelliğe gerçekten bayılıyorum. İzleyicinin doğrudan kişinin ruhuna bakmasına olanak tanıyan bir resim yapmayı seviyorum. Ve bu konuda iyi olduğumu düşünüyorum. Ama dürüst olmak gerekirse, hiçbir şey beni aynı şeyi yapmaktan daha fazla sıkmıyor. Bu nedenle bir noktada yine süper sahnelenmiş bir şey yaratıyorum.
HAYATI ROLLERCOASTER’DA YAŞAYAN MEŞGUL ARI
Fotoğrafta ana malzeme ya da unsur sizin için insan mı? Yoksa durumlar ve kavramlar mı?
Yüzde yüz insanlar! Ve insan odaklı sorular, sorunlar, zorluklarla ilgili kavramlar.
“Colonastics” serinizdeki sarkastik durum şahaneydi. Bu seriden yola çıkarak hayata bakış açınızı merak ediyorum. Nasıl bir hayat felsefeniz var?
Oh, teşekkürler! Evet, bu projenin arka planında ciddi bir konu vardı ama yine de çok eğlenceliydi değil mi? Sonuçta alaycılık, zorluklarla başa çıkmanıza yardımcı olur. Çoğu zaman pek çok şey yaşamış olan insanların en iyi mizah anlayışına sahip olduğunu görmek ilginçtir. Benim hayat felsefeme gelince… Hayatı rollercoaster’daymış gibi yaşayan meşgul bir arı gibiyim. Mutluluk ya da acı gözyaşlarıyla.. Hangisi olduğunu kendiniz seçebilirsiniz!
Şu an hayatınızın nasıl bir dönemindesiniz ve bu dönemi sizce hangi fotoğraf en iyi şekilde anlatırdı?
Hayat asla sabit değil, yerinde durmuyor. Şu an ailem sağlıklı ve ben sanatımla kendimi ifade edebiliyorum. Dolayısıyla çok mutluyum. Yeni ufuklar keşfetmeye hazırım ve bu da heyecan verici. Bu dönemi en iyi anlatan fotoğraf olarak ise “Not Everything Sucks” isimli fotoğrafımı seçerdim.
DENGE KURMAK ASLINDA KOLAY
Ve tabii ilham aldığınız şeyleri sormak istiyorum. Bir de bugüne kadar sizi hangi sanatçılar etkiledi?
Fotoğrafçılardan uzak durmaya çalışıyorum! İlhamımı çoğunlukla müzikten, tanıştığım insanlardan ve kafamda uydurduğum hikâyelerden alıyorum. Ya da direkt kalpten! Ama bana ilham veren ya da vermiş bazı sanatçı isimlerini de sayabilirim: Nick Knight, Travis Scott, Bernd ve Hilla Becher, Jay-Z, Wolfgang Tillmans, Andrea Arnolds.
Çalışma alanlarınız arasında sanat fotoğrafçılığının yanı sıra filmler ve markalarla yapılan fotoğraf işbirlikleri de var. Bunlar arasında nasıl bir denge kuruyorsunuz? Yakın gelecekte başka film projeleriniz var mı?
Denge kurmak aslında kolay: Daha az uyu, daha çok çalış. Ve akıllıca seçim yap. Şu anda ise bir moda filmi üzerinde çalışıyorum. Adı "Eve Döndüğünde Bana Mesaj Gönder”. Bu film, kadınların bir psikopat tarafından avlanma riskiyle karşı karşıya kalmadan şehirde dolaşamamaları konusuna değiniyor.
Contemporary Istanbul’da hangi fotoğraflarınız sergilenecek? Ve daha önce İstanbul’da bulunmuş muydunuz? Eğer bulunduysanız bu şehir ne ifade etti sizin için?
Offf, İstanbul'u seviyorum. İlk gelişim bir film çekimi içindi. Aman tanrım trafik fenaydı! Ama insanlar çok nazikti ve bana çok yardımcı oldular. Şehrinizin çok özel bir havası var. Ve İstanbul asla uyumayan, her zaman meşgul olan bir yer. Hızı seviyorum! İstanbul’a ikinci gelişimde ise daha uzun kaldım ve harika arkadaşlarla harika zaman geçirdim.
“I try to stay away from photographers!”
CI Photo Focus is one of the important sections of the 18th Contemporary Istanbul. The featured artist of the section curated by Simone Klein is Lennart Brede. We spoke to the London and Berlin-based artist, who works in the fields of photography and film, by mail before his exhibition at CI.
One of your photographs that impressed me the most is the portrait of trans model Lola. All emotions come together in this portrait: innocence, anger, mystery, curiosity… What are your priorities when taking a portrait?
Oh yes, thank you. It’s one of my favs too. A very strong expression Lola did bring across right? It’s a good question and actually it does vary. In general i like to sit down with my guest and we just chat. To catch a vibe. And at some point we go into the studio or on location and do the shot. In this case with Lola it was a bit different. She did a performance on a voguing ball. She totally slayed it on stage and the second she came down I did the shot.
Do you want to show the naked truth or fictionalized reality in your photos? Which is more attractive to you?
I really adore the beauty in truth! I like to make a picture that let the viewer look right into the persons soul. And I think i m good at this. But to be honest, nothing bores me more than always doing the same. So at some point i create some super staged thing again.
Is the main material or element in photography human for you? Or situations and concepts?
Humans! 100 percent. And concepts around human driven questions, tasks, challenges…
BUSY BEE ON THE ROLLERCOASTER OF LIFE
The sarcastic situation in your “Colonastics” series was amazing. Based on this series, i m curious about your perspective on life. What kind of life philosophy do you have?
Oh thank you! Yes, this project was big fun with a serious topic as backdrop canvas right. But the sarcasm helps to deal with challenges. It’s interesting to see that people who have been through a lot most of the times have the best humor of all.
My life philosophy? Busy bee on the rollercoaster of life. Or, tears of pleasure tears of pain. You can choose for yourself, but print them both :)
What period of your life are you in right now, and which photo do you think best describes this period?
Well its always shifting right? Life is never constant, never standing still. Right now i am super happy my family is healthy and I can express myself through my art. Art speaking i m reaching out to explore new horizons. Its exciting. Right now I would choose the photo “Not Everything Sucks” as produced and published in my exhibition and photo book “Because You Want to be Loved” i did with Anna Laudel Gallery.
THE BALANCE IS EASY
And of course, I want to ask you what inspires you. Also, which artists have influenced you so far?
I try to stay away from photographers! I get my inspiration from music mostly, and people I meet. And stories i make up in my head or heart. But if i had to drop some names of artist that did/do inspire me it could be Nick Knight, Travis Scott, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Jay-Z, Wolfgang Tillmans, Andrea Arnolds.
In addition to art photography, your areas of work also include photography collaborations with films and brands. How do you strike a balance between these? Do you have any other film projects in the near future?
The balance is easy, sleep less work more. And choose wisely. Just learning to say no, its a difficult one!
I’m working on a fashion film right now. It is called “Text Me When You Get Home” and it touches the topic of women not being able to stroll through the city without running risk getting hunted by some psychopath. I mean its 2023, come on! It is just unbelievable.
Which of your photographs will be exhibited at Contemporary Istanbul? And have you been to Istanbul before? If you have been there, what did this city mean to you?
Uff, I love Istanbul! The first time I came to shoot a film. The traffic was mental oh my gosh! And the people super kind and helping me on my mission. You have a very unique vibe to your city. And it is a place that never sleeps, always busy. I love the pace. Then i came for another film shoot and stayed longer for Contemporary Istanbul. We had a great time with great friends, making more friends.
